The Agricultural Research Institute (LARI), in charge of the implementation of the pest and disease forecast system within ADP, organized a series of conferences related to various activities related to the in the project, which were held on 28 August, 4 and 11 September 2007 at the Agricultural Research Institute (LARI), Fanar station, and which mainly targeted ADP/LARI team as part of capacity building of ADP experts, and also, of exchange of expertise among them..
Conference included presentations about automated climatic database for agricultural development in Lebanon and its application at research and professional levels and highlighted the following main issues:
- An enhance ability to identify and control of main pest and diseases that threaten major crops in Lebanon (pome and stone fruits, grapes, citrus, olive, potato and vegetables).
- The need to refrain from the intensive use of pesticides and to alternatively promote the adoption of environmentally friendly control strategies, with emphasis on mechanical and biological issues as to ensure that the produced fruits and vegetables contain acceptable levels of pesticides residues.
- The need to establish an efficient information network covering all Lebanon to disseminate accurate and timely information on the risks related to pests and diseases and on the adoption of appropriate agricultural practices
- The importance of the technical packages in the provision of the information needed to ensure the production of fruits and vegetables in quantities that best meet market demand, and with high quality levels as to better compete within the markets of European and neighboring countries; this ultimately shall have a positive impact on farmers’ incomes.
