ADP at a glance

The Agricultural Development Project (ADP) is part of the European Union’s (EU) technical assistance projects designated for Lebanon for the period 2004-2006. The financing agreement related to the implementation of ADP was signed by the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), representing the Lebanese government, and the European Union on March 2006. As a pilot project conceived based on MoA’s strategic vision regarding the development of the agricultural sector in Lebanon, ADP results will be central in the elaboration of future agricultural policies.

Originally the project was intended to last till 31/12/2007. ADP was then extended till 31/12/2008.

Objectives and services

The project aims at increasing incomes of farmers operating in the fruits and vegetable sector by training them on the optimal use of factors of production, by improving the quality of their products’ in better compliance with the requirements of international markets, and by establishing new marketing channels to ensure a wider commercialization of their products.
For this purpose, ADP provides capacity building services to the 48 farmer groups on the technical, marketing, managerial and financial levels.
Each of the 48 farmer groups benefiting from ADP has been awarded a grant of a maximum of Euro 80,000 (representing 40% of their total investment within ADP) by the European Commission in August 2006. This shall enable them to improve production quality and standards, access new markets, and build long term business relationship with large scale distribution (i.e. exporters, food processors, etc.).

ADP services implemented by the FCCIAL are:
  • Market, Export, and Trade Norms Information Services (MIS).
  • Farm Management and Accounting Centers (FMAC).
  • A Bar code and traceability system for the fruit and vegetable sector in Lebanon.
  • ADP newsletter and website.

ADP services implemented by the LARI are:
  • Pest and Plant Disease Forecast Service.
